Sleep travels worst — plan it first
Bring the sound machine and the sleep sack you use at home. Those two cues do more for a strange room than any travel cot does.
A playard with a bassinet layer doubles as a nap spot and a safe place to put the baby down while you unpack. Check whether your accommodation already provides one before you haul yours to the airport.
Airports and flights
A compact fold stroller that fits in the overhead bin saves you gate-checking and waiting on the jet bridge with a tired baby in your arms.
Feed or offer a dummy on take-off and descent to help with ear pressure. Pack twice the nappies you think the flight needs — delays are the norm, not the exception.
Feeding on the road
Pre-measure formula into a dispenser rather than carrying open tubs. Airport security allows baby milk and water in reasonable quantities in hand luggage.
A manual or wearable pump is worth its weight if you are nursing — it works without a socket and fits in a seat pocket.
Car seats and hire cars
Bring your own seat where you can. Hire-car seats arrive unlabelled, with unknown history and often without the right base.
A travel system with a car-seat-compatible frame means you can move a sleeping baby from car to pavement without waking them.
The small bag that saves the day
Nappies, wipes, two changes of clothes, a spare top for you, a nasal aspirator, infant paracetamol, a thermometer and a plastic bag for the disaster.
Keep it on your body, not in the hold. Everything else can be replaced at your destination.
