Building the Perfect Nursery Registry

A good registry has three price tiers and no filler. Build it once, in this order, and you can stop second-guessing it.

Tier one: the daily drivers

Sleep surface, car seat, a safe place to set the baby down, and a way to feed. Everything else is optional in month one.

A playard with a bassinet covers sleeping, napping and travel in one line item — which is why it earns its place before anything decorative.

Tier two: comfort and sanity

Sound machine, swaddles, nursing pillow, carrier. These are the items parents repurchase and gift to other parents.

Add multiples of anything washable. Two sleep sacks is not excessive; it is laundry maths.

Tier three: the group gifts

Strollers, premium monitors and travel systems belong here. Leave one or two so relatives can go in together.

What to leave off

Newborn shoes, wipe warmers, full bedding sets, and anything sized for a specific season you cannot predict.
