The Minimalist Baby Registry: 20 Things, Nothing More

The rule: weekly use or it does not make the list

If you cannot picture using it in an ordinary week, it is a maybe, not an essential. Maybes go on a second list you share only if people ask.

Multi-use wins every time. A stretchy wrap is a carrier, a nap spot and a coat. A wipe-clean mat is a changing station anywhere in the house.

The twenty, grouped

Sleep: bedside bassinet, two fitted sheets, two sleep sacks, a white noise machine.

Feeding: four bottles, a silicone pump, bibs, muslins, and either a wearable pump or a formula dispenser depending on your plan.

Nappies: nappies in two sizes, fragrance-free wipes, barrier cream, a wipe-clean changing mat.

Out of the house: an infant car seat, a carrier or wrap, a pushchair that folds into your boot, one nappy bag.

Everything else: a thermometer, a nasal aspirator, nail scissors.

What to leave off, kindly

Cot bumpers and pillows are unsafe rather than unnecessary. Wipe warmers, nappy bins, shoes, a full newborn wardrobe and most toys are simply not needed yet.

Bouncers, playmats and high chairs are real purchases — just later ones. Add them to the second list.

Asking for less, without awkwardness

People want to give something. Add a few mid-priced items so there is a range, and add a group-gift option for the pushchair or car seat.

For anyone who insists, nappies in size 2 and 3 are always welcome and always run out.
