Infant seat or convertible?
An infant seat is rear-facing only, has a carry handle, and clicks in and out of a base — so a sleeping baby stays asleep. Most children outgrow one by height somewhere around twelve months.
A convertible seat stays in the car and lasts for years, but you lift the baby in and out every time. Many families buy an infant seat first and a convertible second.
Check it fits your car, not just your baby
Measure front-to-back space with the seat reclined correctly. Small cars and rear-facing seats are a real constraint.
If you will fit two or three seats across, check the width before buying. Narrow models exist for exactly this reason.
Travel systems save real effort
If the seat clicks onto your pushchair frame, school runs and shop trips get dramatically easier. Confirm the adapter exists for your specific frame before ordering.

Installation beats specification
Most seats are installed incorrectly. Use the belt-tensioning system or lower anchors, and check there is less than an inch of movement at the belt path.
Harness straps sit at or below the shoulders when rear-facing, snug enough that you cannot pinch slack, with the chest clip at armpit height.
Bulky coats go on over the harness, never under it.
When to move on
Move up when they hit the height or weight limit — usually height first. Rear-face as long as your seat allows; it is meaningfully safer.
