Balance Bikes vs Scooters: Which First?

Fit comes before everything

Measure the inside leg. On a balance bike they should sit on the saddle with both feet flat and a small bend at the knee.

On a scooter, the handlebar should reach somewhere between waist and chest height. Too tall and they steer with their whole body.

Which one first

From about eighteen months, a three-wheel lean-to-steer scooter is easier — it stays upright on its own and needs less coordination.

From about two, a balance bike builds the exact skill that makes pedal bikes click later. Children who start on balance bikes usually skip stabilisers entirely.

Plenty of families own both, and they get used in different places: scooter for the school run, bike for the park.

Indoors, pavements and parks

Rubber tyres are quieter and grip better on pavements; foam tyres never puncture and weigh less.

If storage is tight, a folding scooter wins. If your route is bumpy, the bike wins.

The kit that matters

A properly fitted helmet from the first ride, two fingers above the eyebrows, straps forming a V under the ears.

Knee and elbow pads for the scooter phase. Shoes with a solid sole — sandals and balance bikes do not mix.
